PRODUCT RATING : PRODUCT OVERVIEW : GuitarRx is one of the two similar sites that are all essentially the same thing. This site - along with guitar-leads.com - provide guitar lessons based around famous licks and solos, with the goal of not only teaching you how to play these licks and riffs, but to teach you the technique behind them.
Detailed Review : This is not a typical guitar instructional site. It doesn't really do the whole "How to Play Guitar" and is instead aimed at existing players who are looking to take their playing to the higher level. So if you are beginner I suggest you look elsewhere. What you get are individual lessons on songs that will teach you the signature riffs and solos. Each "lesson" features their "amazing" technology that not only loops the musicial segment so you don't have to fast forward and rewind all the time, but can slow the track down to half speed and keep the same pitch. It's really not a big deal. As all the riffs are recorded as audio (which is a plus), an alternate version at half speed has also been provided. Because of this you cannot incrementally speed up to reach the regular tempo as you master the lesson. It is definitley not as useful and flexible as they make out. The site doesn't have the usual monthly or one time fee. In this case you pay for each individual song you want to work through, and the price is dependant on the amount of material that has been extracted from the song. The more licks and riffs included in the lesson, the more expensive the track. Unfortunately, this song selection is where the weak point of the site resides. Whoever is choosing the songs is stuck in "Classic Rock" from the 50's through to the 70's.Chuck Berry, Hollies, The Temptations may all be great acts, but they not really the sort of material most guitarists are trying to master these days. The lessons themselves are quite good, the transcriptions are extremely accurate, and the audio is good quality. Basically, GuitrRX offers individual selection of any of the tracks on offer. You can choose as many or a few as you want and be done with it. Guitar-Leads sells the same songs but grouped into volumes. To sweeten the deal they also provide a couple of ebooks for beginners and some decent chord and scale generating guitar software. GuitarRX offers a free sign up with $10 credit, so your best bet is to sign up and try it first. If it suits you then you can choose from there to download just the tracks you want, or if the song selection is your thing, then go over and buy the course from Guitar-Leads. |
